Growing scandal. The Pope’s first pastoral letter교서 on child abuse in the church as allegations in his home country escalate. Today the Pope sent a pastoral letter to the people of Ireland on the issue of preventing and punishing the sexual abuse of children by priests. But there are new concerns about what he may have known about the abuse in German parishes교구 when he was an archbishop대주교 in Munich. NBC’s Stephanie Gosk joins us now from the Vatican tonight with more on this. Stephanie, good evening.

Good evening, Anne. When the letter the Pope addresses the sexual abuse allegations in Ireland and tries to help the people in that country recover, but the Catholics in his homeland want to know why he hasn’t responded to their crisis. In Germany, abuse allegations from the past four decades keep flooding in, 100s since January. 100 alone involving this monastery in Munich. With the crisis growing at an alarming rate, yesterday bishops주교 in Germany took a step that some call revolutionary.

From now on, German bishops have to report all cases of alleged sexual abuse directly to the police…a practice the Vatican does not demand. The bishops have their proclamation선언 will prevent more cases of abuse like the one in the 1980s when Pope Benedict was archbishop of Munich. Peter Holliman, a priest in his diocese교구 was accused of molesting young boys.

Dr. Burner Hood was the psychiatrist treating Holliman at the time. The Vatican says the Pope knew about Holliman’s counseling. Hood says he warned the church 30 years ago that the priest was a pedophile소아애병자 and shouldn’t work with children. But after treatment, his patient returned to work and continued to abuse young boys.

The Vatican insists Pope Benedict did not make the decision to allow Holliman to return to his parish work. As reports of church abuse spread in Germany, there’s growing anger that the Pope has yet to address this case or any other in his homeland. So far, he’s only spoken privately with the heads of the German church. “The German bishops let him know that the situation in Germany is frankly dramatically. So they had to do something.”

More than half of Germany’s dioceses are facing abuse allegations. And as the scandal grows, so do doubts. A poll of German Catholics find 67% think the charges of abuse are damaging the church’s credibility. The German churches really worked very quickly to deal with this crisis setting up a task force to deal with pastor abuses and prevent future ones. They’re hoping that their Pope acts with similar urgency. Anne? All right. Stephanie Gosk tonight. Thank you so much, Stephanie.
