독일 장벽 20년 이후

 

This was a day to celebrate in Berlin on the 20^th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. German Chancellor Angela Merkel who grew up in East Germany joined former soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to retrace her 1989 trip from East to West Berlin. Later, a row of giant dominos was toppled along the former location of the wall. As mark Phillips reports, it wasn’t just a country that came together 20 years ago, families did as well.

 

The official commemorations축하were big and loud. The private celebrations were small and heartfelt진심에서 우러난. None more so than the reunion of the Zoroman sisters, Utah and Erica and Erica’s daughter Sandra. The family was reunited that night 20 years ago on a Berlin train station platform just as they were again on this anniversary.

 

Erica pregnant with Sandra had fled to the west eight years before the wall fell. Smuggled out in the trunk of a diplomat’s car. She didn’t think she’d ever see her family again. “Did you feel nervous or anxious?” “Yeah. Yeah.” “Very nervous?” The family like the country was back together. “Now when you think back on it?” “Do you think you made the right decision?” “100%” Erica found work and raised Sandra who now has a career as a graphic artist. She had opportunities that 20 years later school kids in Eastern Germany are only now beginning to enjoy. After unification, East Germany industry collapsed. More than a million people have moved west looking for work.

 

And in the eastern town of Haler, the kids still wonder if they too will have to follow the money and leave. Sandra Zoroman has a lot to thank her mother for. “So you feel she did you a pretty good favor?” “Yeah. yeah.” The favor of a better life. Mark Phillips, CBS News, Berlin.
