I’m Katie Couric. Also tonight, congress tackles the NFL. The league is under fire over head injuries that may lead to dementia치매 and Alzheimer’s. This is the CBS Evening News. Turning to Capitol Hill where the focus today was on the head-to-head battles on football fields all over America. They cause some of the sports-related concussions뇌진탕 as many as 4 million every year that have been linked to long term brain damage. As Jeff Gore explains, the NFL is being accused of not doing enough to protect players.

Elena Profetto explained exactly why. “He can no longer dress, bathe, or feed himself.” For seven years, Profetto’s husband Ralph Winssel played football for the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburg Stealers. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 10 years ago. “Frankly my husband no longer has a life and he does not have a life that he and I would want for anyone else.”
The hearings were prompted by recent university of Michigan survey commissioned by the NFL that showed retired pro football players are 19 times more likely to be diagnosed with dementia than the general population. 17-year-old Will Benson died of a brain injury while playing for his Texas high school football team. His death, says the team trainer admitted, he did not know how to treat brain trauma외상성 장애. “Don’t let it happen again, please.”
Today, Commissioner Roger Goodel said the league is working on newer, more protective helmets and providing more than $100 million in benefits to retired players this year. “I can’t think of no issue to which I devoted more time and attention than the health and wellbeing of NFL players.” Many witnesses said the NFL has made tremendous progress on caring for concussion injuries. It was a short trip for NASA‘s newest rocket today, but it passed its first test. The Ares 1-X reached an altitude고도 of 28 miles before tumbling into the ocean minutes later. The plan is for Ares rockets to launch astronauts into space after the shuttle is retired next year.
