You know, we have to remember the entire Gulf Coast region, especially New Orleans, they’re still recovering from the tragedy 비극 of Katrina 3 years ago. So no one in that area is taking this storm lightly. NBC’s Lester Holt joins us now. Lester, good morning to you.
Except for the National Guard 주방위군 and other emergency responders, the famous streets of the French quarter 뉴올리언스에 있는 도시 emptied over the weekend. Even those whose livelihood 생계 depend on tourism and good times welcomed the unusual scene. “I’m glad everybody got out.” And with hundreds of thousands of people on the move, Gustav’s ripple effects 파급효과 are already being felt throughout the region.
In Texas and in Kentucky, workers prepared for waves of evacuees 피난자, many of whom survived Hurricanes Katrina and Rita three years ago. Another major concern here is whether the levee system, battered 강타하다 during Katrina, is ready for the storm. Despite frayed <신경을> 소모시키다 nerves, some who survived Katrina are holding out for hope.
Hurricane Gustav is forcing some big changes at the Republican National Convention 공화당 전당대회 with John McCain say this is no time for a political celebration. Day 1 of the convention is being abbreviated 단축하다 to include only essential party business. About 15% of US refining capacity 정제능력 is shut down because of Gustav. Experts say if the storm causes a prolonged 오래 끄는, 장기의 disruption 중단, gas prices could soar by 20 cents a gallon or more. AAA 미국자동차협회 says regular gas is now $3.69 a gallon.
