Tonight may be the night the US Navy fires a missile from a ship in the Pacific in an attempt to blow a falling spy satellite out of the sky. On board the satellite, by the way, half a ton of frozen toxic 유독한 fuel. We knew that this satellite, which is the size of a school bus, was dying and falling back to earth. We were first told not to worry about it, but now the Pentagon 국방부 wants to do this. They say, so the satellite won’t fall into the wrong hands on earth. If the weather is clear tonight, they will give the order to fire. We get more on this from NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski at the Pentagon.
All systems to shoot down the broken <기계 등이> 고장난 spy satellite from a Navy ship later tonight appear to be a go. A massive Pacific storm had threatened to postpone 연기하다 the operation 작전. But tonight, military officials say chances for the shoot down now look good. A three-stage missile will be launched 발사하다 from the Navy’s USS Lake Erie, 600 miles northwest of the Hawaiian Islands, to intercept 요격하다 the satellite orbiting <지구 등의> 주위를 궤도를 그리며 돌다 out of control 150 miles above the earth.
Racing toward each other at 20,000 miles per hour, the missile’s non-explosive warhead <미사일·어뢰 등의> 탄두 will slam into 충돌하다 the satellite, smashing it into thousands of pieces which should float harmlessly to earth. The aim is to destroy the satellite’s fuel tank and its 1,000 pounds of toxic hydrazine 로켓 연료용 유성 액체 fuel which could pose a threat to people on the ground.
