Good evening. Tens of thousands of Americans are suffering tonight without power. Many of them out of their homes and big portions of the Pacific Northwest are under water this evening including a major transportation artery 주요도로, 간선. All of it because of a powerful early season storm system bringing very dangerous weather to that region of the US. Let’s go to NBC’s George Lewis who’s in Seattle, again tonight to start us off. George, good evening.

 

Good evening, Brian. In the aftermath <전쟁, 재해 등의> 여파, 영향 of the storm, officials are just now beginning to total up the damage. Things like this huge sink hole behind me. And this isn’t the biggest problem tonight. Water, water, everywhere. That’s the story in Washington State as rivers overflow their banks 둑, 제방. It’s closed Interstate-5 between Portland and Seattle. Dikes 제방, 도랑 designed to protect this area failed, worsening the problem.

 

Navy and Coast Guard helicopters, some from as far away as San Diego, were called in to help rescue flood victims. Some who were flooded out said the water came pouring in suddenly. To the south, in Vernonia, Oregon, high water and mudslides 진흙사태 left the town cut off from the outside. Here, the governor mobilized 동원하다 National Guard Troops to assist people who’ve been hardest hit. There was one lighter moment when people spotted a salmon swimming across a flooded road. “Another one… just get ready to cross.” And started rooting for it.
