Meredith and Matt, good morning. Good morning, everybody. We begin with President Bush who today announced stiff 거센, 강력한 new sanctions against the government of Sudan because of the continuing atrocities 잔학한 행위 in Darfur. NBC’s White House correspondent Kelly O’Donnell has more on this story this morning. Kelly, good morning.
Good morning, Anne. As you know from having been there, the scale 규모 of this tragedy is hard to comprehend 이해하다, 파악하다. More than 200,000 dead in four years. So in effect 요컨대 today, the president is saying, time is up for the leader of the Sudanese government. He had planned to announce these sanctions back in April, but at the request of the UN Secretary General 사무총장, he allowed for more time in the hope that diplomacy 외교 would work.
But senior officials tell NBC News that in those weeks since, the Sudanese leader President Bashir has, in fact, obstructed 가로막다, 방해하다 and has not allowed food and humanitarian aid 인도주의적 원조 to get to people and has also bombed a meeting where rebel 반군 leaders were talking about peace. So today, the president is directing the Departments of Treasury and State to impose ~를 가하다 sanctions.
